Maybe some reasonable degree of encryption . . . enforcement of some reasonable degree of externally audited personnel and facilities clearances . . . penalties for the data transcriber / producer / etc for each and every disclosure . . . perhaps $10,000 and 10 years in the federal penitentiary for each disclosure of covered individual's protected information. What is the purpose of storing obsolete data on OPM servers that can be accessed through the internet? We need to stop being so lazy that we think that we have to have instant access to something like an SF86 from a retiree from 1986. There is no reason in the world why we can't store data on media that requires a human to complete an access request - at least for data that should be archived. The latest news reveals that data going back to 1980's was taken. Since everyone in the CG has to have a secret clearance, it means even someone who spent a short time in the service and has been discharged now has had their identity stolen along with all the other truely valuable targets. There is no reason that the masses of people who perform ordinary tasks and then leave the service should have to worry about a hack like this one. We are providing smoke for the enemy as well as ammo. All the ordinary guys will now have to have credit monitoring and other services because some lazy person somewhere thinks its too much effort to purge retirees and veterans data from active servers at OPM. The vast majority of servers we have hooked up to the internet has data that is not used by anyone. It is just fruit for the picking for hackers.
