SGT(P) Abner Lozano 4677228

I want to know if it is even possible to take classes or apply to a department while on Active Duty, to obtain a P.O.S.T Certificate and possibly work as a Reserve Law Enforcement Officer (ie. Reserve Deputy, or Reserve Police Officer, etc.) If anyone knows of any department in the Clarksville, TN area, that would also be great since that is where I am going, soon. How can I obtain a Peace Officer's Standards on Training (P.O.S.T) Certificate while on Active Duty? 2019-05-29T02:04:08-04:00 SGT(P) Abner Lozano 4677228

I want to know if it is even possible to take classes or apply to a department while on Active Duty, to obtain a P.O.S.T Certificate and possibly work as a Reserve Law Enforcement Officer (ie. Normally 8 to 10 weeks in house. You can take classes but you still have to attend a academy. We had a award program at fort Ord when it was open that the MP of the year would be sent to the police academy Response by 1SG Ernest Schmidt made May 29 at 2019 11:57 AM 2019-05-29T11:57:20-04:00 2019-05-29T11:57:20-04:00 LTC Jason Mackay 4680631

SGT(P) Abner Lozano have you talked to legal assistance to see if your active duty status triggers Posse Commitatus, even though you are seeking a reserve officer status.

Other contributors have commented on POST certification. Reserve officers have a Diet Coke version of POST at least where I live. It is only the County Sheriffs Office. You do weekends for like 6 months and two weeks in the summer and have to redo it it every year. It is not transferable to being hired full time. They are used in jails or where ever they are needed. They want you to volunteer 48 hours a month. You have to buy all your own gear. It's enough to put you out on the street, but unless you had full time POST certification, the time doesn't count.

Montgomery County TN has a Reserve Officer program https://mcgtn.org/news/reserve-deputies-graduate

Reserve Deputies Graduate | Montgomery County Government

Montgomery County Government1 Millennium Plaza(Map|Directions)Clarksville, TN 37040(931) 648-8482E-mail Us

Response by LTC Jason Mackay made May 30 at 2019 12:06 AM 2019-05-30T00:06:21-04:00 2019-05-30T00:06:21-04:00 SGT Jim Humphrey 4696586

Depends on the state you want to work in. Oregon requires you be employed for training. My brother worked in Colorado where he and his son went to POST and we're then hired by department. Check with the state you want to work in.......good luck Response by SGT Jim Humphrey made Jun 4 at 2019 2:55 PM 2019-06-04T14:55:03-04:00 2019-06-04T14:55:03-04:00 2019-05-29T02:04:08-04:00
