Is there some way (would it even be permitted?) for someone to volunteer to do this? They may be able to assist. Check the local Vet groups. 2. Try Bugler's for Funerals- there use to be a listing. Many VFW/Am Legion, etc. that have Color Guards also do Funeral honors. The Funeral Director should know how to do this. The Funeral detail is also coordinated through the Funeral Director to the Army CAOC or service equivalent. A unit in the region is tasked to,provide Funeral honors.

Is it permitted? Yes, for an eligible person's funeral. Eligibility is determined by the VA. The gate way is the DD214 or historic equivalent presented to the Funeral Director. I frequently played taps at military funerals in high school and college. It was a great honor and privilege to do so.
