Looking at my options with the Reserves. My recruiter mentioned that she could find slots for me anywhere and I would get reimbursed up to $500 for travel to drill. The idea came up that I could sign up with a unit in California which is where my wives family is and it could maybe open a door for more frequent visits if she came with me. What’s the reality of travel reimbursements?

IDT is an active program. However, it is subject to the availability of funds from FY to FY. you will pay for your travel and meals and hotel in route and the. File a local voucher not to exceed the 500 dollar limit

It was always out of pocket when I drilled unless the unit was preparing for deployment and then they might provide hotel rooms and meals with the extra money for mobilizing. So I would throw the BS card on the travel reimbursement but its true she could probably place you in a USAR unit anywhere if they have a vacancy for your MOS our are willing to retrain you. Best of Luck.

It is a benefit, not a guarantee. Last FY many of us had to pay out of pocket and wait 5 -6 months to receive reimbursement.
