So retired Army Colonel General Douglas Macgregor makes the statement that Russia would annihilate U.S. Forces in direct confrontation.

He is right and he is oh so very wrong.
(in my opinion)
The current political atmosphere of this country and congresses seemingly unwritten rule to send us into the fray with hands and feet tied behind our backs. Russia will win the day. My fear for future conflict, should it arise, is that its going to take initial high U.S. casualty rate to "wake up" our policy makers and make them realize they need to keep their heads out of military planning and strategy.

I do believe though should the figurative gloves come off. The ultimate victory would stand with America in a non nuclear war. I do not make this statement to downplay Russia's military might or proficiency. Or forget lessons of old with Russia proving time and again to be a brutal combatant in it's home territory. Not only the military but also the environment itself.

I think the analyst failed to figure a couple of things. Firstly we've been accomplishing the mission outstandingly underfunded and poorly equipped for decades. (double that for you salty devil dogs reading this) and he also failed to account for the complete and reckless disregard of self preservation exhibited by American troops generation to generation.

That said I hope someone near the top was actually awake while he was going through his powerpoint presentation and was taking notes.

I think that anything can happen, especially with conventional forces with lots of firepower. my only hesitation with siding with Russia is that despite their limited exposure to combat in Syria and Ukraine, the bulk of their military isn't as well trained and equipment tested. They are having big problems in Syria with their aircraft that for us would be non-mission capable for us. But still, we shouldn't discount them

Our biggest problem is the US GOV and our POTUS, for the most part, does not have the tenacity for a war with Russia. Since we are the 1% of the population that serves in a Reserve or Active duty capacity, many don't have the stomach for it. That is what happened in the Vietnam War and we are like this now. The POTUS and many others in society worry more about global warming and climate change and not how we will be militarily in the next 5 or 10 years. We need to have our warface on now and not worry about elections now or ever. Politicians have this gridlock and the tea party is no help either. Trump is a result of this and I am not a happy Republican.

Really, we are nowhere near a fight with Russia. Yes, they're stirring the pot, but that's more a reaction to the NATO expansion into the former satellites that we swore would never happen and the abrogation of several arms control treaties on the part of the United States. Russia's just pushing back. The annexation of Crimea was just Russia very boldly drawing a line in the sand. Please don't tell me that you really ever thought that Russia would ever risk losing Sevastopol.

More to the point is China, which is aggressively expanding it's bubble in the South China Sea, waging a campaign of economic dominance throughout the third world, pilfering technology from 1st world companies, threatening Taiwan and India and subjugating minorities within its borders.

However, the Chinese do employ many of the tactics in the Russian playbook, which is to exhaust technologically superior forces with overwhelming numbers. It worked for Russia in WWII and the Chinese during the Korean War. Keep in mind that the invasion of Iraq seriously depleted cruise missile reserves and that was certainly not a peer to peer conflict. Moreover, the US force structure has been warped to fight counterinsurgencies. It certainly seems that we are now in a flat footed position and need to readjust our stance.
