Years ago I watched several Shakespeare plays performed. They are each filled with poetry SGT Private RallyPoint Member. I have seen aspiring poets recite their poetry at bookstores.
I expect most of us remember the crude poetry that was displayed on bathroom and latrine walls in the previous decades when wooden latrines existed :-)
As to your second question, I have never seen or even heard of Def Poetry.
The first thought that came to mind was Def Leopard :-)

I have a funny story about a young soldier reciting poetry at our Unit Christmas party. His poem was about a 9 year old boy and it was going OK until he mentioned his father being shot and bleeding out. I assumed that someone would have screened his poem. I pulled him over and said there is a time and place for everything, and this was not the time. I laughed then told him it was a good poem.

Sadly the only poetry reading I ever attended outside a classroom was in a coffee house during the Beat Generation. Sadly, it really put me off poetry for a long time. It also put me off unwashed humanity and condemned buildings...
