Even as World War II was ending 70 years ago, Americans already knew it had transformed their country. What they didn’t know was just how much or for how long.

In that last wartime summer of 1945, the seeds of a new America had been sown. Not just postwar America — the Baby Boom, the Cold War, the Affluent Society, the sprawling suburbs — but the one in which we live today.

It made America a global super power and thank God it happened when it did. Great leadership, brass balls and character. Some men committed suicide because they couldn't serve. A different time.

I would like to see how Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Patton would have dealt with today's Army and political climate. I believe that if they had led us in to the GWOT the fight would have been over years ago, and ISIS would not exist. God bless our greatest generation.

Interesting side story on how the trauma of World War II might outlast its survivors ...

World War II left a huge number of people traumatized. They often carried physical and mental scars that proved difficult, if not impossible, to fully heal over time.

But the trauma also lives on in people who were not even born when the events of World War II occurred. These are the children or even grandchildren of the era's survivors, and the events still resonate in their lives, creating a deep cloud that can last a lifetime.

A different war, a different world. The country has only come together once as Americans since. It would be nice to see that happen again without a national tragedy.

At the end of WW2, we had an entire generation of young people who had sacrificed and worked very hard for a great cause, seen the world, and had come home to the only major country that didn't have all of it's infrastructure completely destroyed. What a wonderful "set up for the success" in the second half of the 20th century. They had earned it through sweat, blood, life, and limb; and lucky for all of us, they took full advantage of the "set up".

I can imagine the sadness as broken hearts filled the previous, current, and future generations. Hearts that could never be fixed.
