with the involvement with social media, people blowing things out of proportion, overthrowing law and order, fights, rallying with disastrous results (damages), sure. If we didn't have those "Luxuries" of social media (Twitter, FB, etc.) it would possibly be more of a "normal" election.

I don't have to go back to the 1800's.
Bush vs Gore is easily the most controversial election for President.
How soon we forget the days of hanging chads and the Supreme Court having to rule on a state's process for a recount.

I would support that it has not. Really what has impacted each election more and more is technology. If today's technology had been used since the start, it would probably nasty each time. Now you see it on RP, Facebook, Twitter, and tons of other places. You cannot escape it.
