It's a pretty area. Although not exactly related to your project, Walla Walla, WA is nice for a visit.

Unfortunately never been to either of them. Have visited Big Bend tho and found it to be super hot and dry in the summertime...

I've never been there, but here is some likely and useful information in your writing: The Nez Percé tribe, properly pronounced as "Nay Pair-say," means Pierced Nose tribe in French. It was common centuries ago that the warriors and some of the women pierced their noses to distinguish themselves from neighboring Shoshone and Blackfoot Nations.

There is a Ken Burn's documentary on the West on Netflix. He talks extensively about them and their pursuit to freedom which was dashed close to the Canadian border.
