Has any of your deployments reminded you of a military TV show or movie?

December '95 I deployed to OJE. When I arrived at Camp Harmon by the Sava River, it was the mud. Reminded me of all the mud I saw in the old TV show "Combat" and other WWII movies (first pic actual WWII pic). I thought to myself - "Yea, always mud every where" Especially when I was at Cowboy TOC, and saw Engineer vehicles up to the axles in mud (130 Eng BDE).

Jarhead gets a lot of flak, but personally this movie resonated with me on such a personal level. Between the hurry up and wait, the little fuck-fuck games, even getting the Dear Johns. This is one of those movies that perfectly resembles the military experience. We like to believe we're all kicking down doors and engaging enemies, but some of us just go home wishing we felt more useful.

I have the opposite perspective -- the movies remind me of locations I've been deployed to -- raining in Panama, check -- dust storms, check -- snow, check etc

Generation kill - 2004-2005 Iraq, lots of driving around punctuated with some seriously intense shit. Then people getting in fist fights because we had no way to blow off steam and no one to fight except each other.

When I was in Iraq, I felt like I was in the movie "Three Kings" except I didn't have SF running around with me..........or going off into the desert by ourselves.........or searching for gold.........or wearing my MOPP gear.......

Years ago, while stationed at Fort Lewis, WA, I was watching Audie Murphy's movie "To Hell and Back". There was a scene that took place in the Anzio campaign where they battle the Germans over a farm house. There is a very distinctive terrain feature in the background of those scenes, which I recognized immediately as "Squaw Tit" (now named Pushtay). It is a hill near the cantonment area at Yakima Training Center. Every time I went to Yakima after that I thought of that movie being filmed there.

Well, two movies were shot on/with the USS Enterprise. The first was Top Gun, and the second was Hunt for Red October. Top Gun was before my time, but was on board for HFRO.

When I was on both the USS NEW JERSEY & USS WISCONSIN and we where out with a task force for the sand box even though it was not as large as the longest day it did feel like that cause there was a lot of ships also when we made a run to a few other places that was in harms way those ships just just say yea we are BAD are you talking to me ?

Well..I was deployed to South Korea. Need I say more. I often think of the "frozen chosen," when I see the show MASH. They loved in tents. we lived in qounset huts. Just as cold.

Yes, I was a scrounger during the late 60's and many years after I ETS'd I was amused to see a TV Show we all know called MASH. Basically, I was RADAR! Before there was a TV Show called MASH. Although Alan Alda was such a Liberal Putz I often was screaming at the TV.....

Sp4 Byron Skinner…The move my deployment in Vietnam reminds me of is "Ground Hog Day" the same thing every day. My your included the "wet monsoon" my unit was deployed into a fews fire zone. Since we had tracks (M 113's) I guess the Generals felt they were mobile homes and we only got pulled for the field for second ties maintenance to our vehicle.. Each track had a minimum basic load of 12,800 linked 7.62x51mm, 2,000 .50 linked BMG. 96 40mm Grenades, and about the same of M-26A1 Hand Grenades and a half doves boxes of 5.56mm for our dismounts and any infantry working with us. This was before C-4 was issued so the dismount carried 2x 50lbs. Boxes of TNT and det kits…We would have to find an ammo dump to pull into about every week where we grabbed a shower, we had to sea out fatigues because we had no changes and then hump ammo while still wet especial in the 1ID base camp at An Loc where were we especially un-welcomed…The big experts of the current military ask why we road on top and not inside an armored vehicle. The above is the answer. An M 113 ACAV did lose its cherry until it got its first 57mm hole from a Chicom Recoilless rifle in its side. The you were part of the platoon…Purple Hearts were easier to get then a real hot meal.

When I was Station at Ft Lewis in 1974 through 1978 we did training at Yakima Firing Center reminds me of The Rat Patrol.
