However, with the open southern border allowing anyone and everyone across this is a very real possibility. Only time will tell. Is this possibility something we as a nation should concern ourselves with?

While the dude holding up the t-shirt is probably clueless, I do believe our southern border is very porous. I dealt with this issue when I was working at US Northern Command and we were closely connected with the Dept. of Homeland Security.
Whatever policy we decide to ultimately enforce - and if it is tied to immigration reform - I'll let the politicians deal with that. However, we do need to have some level of effective enforcement to permit/deny access to our homeland.
