I realize that the objective was to have the ANA take the lead patrolling the back country, but that is where the enemy is at. In order to win at counter-insurgency you have to undermine their base; the population they draw recruits, supplies, and political power from. By pulling US forces out of the COPs that were sited (some stupidly, tactically) in order to interdict infiltration and supply routes, aren't we making it easier for the Taliban to consolidate their hold on large areas of Eastern Afghanistan?
Further, doesn't this give the enemy a powerful "legitimate" political voice in the Afghan political process, where dissent in enemy-held areas is easily intimidated or worse?

I have often wondered about this, and I look forward to your thoughts, sir. 1SG Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 11 May 2015 12:19:38 -0400 2015-05-11T12:19:38-04:00 Response by CPT Private RallyPoint Member made May 11 at 2015 12:21 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/command-post/general-mcchrystal-here-on-rallypoint-what-questions-do-you-have?n=659492&urlhash=659492

Sir,

Thank you for your time, and for fielding our questions here at RallyPoint.

In this period of rapid drawdown/force shaping, what should the Army's #1 priority be?

(In complete transparency, giving credit where credit is due, this question was initially posed--as a poll--by CPT(P) Private RallyPoint Member on THIS thread, and it has garnered quite a bit of interest and discussion: https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/should-sharp-be-the-1-priority-for-the-army-right-now)

The poll options are the following: Suicide, Pay & Benefits, SHARP, Equal Opportunity, and Draw Down....but, some did answer with a different option/rationale than those provided in the poll....)

Thank you, Sir. Sir, many of us have spent years fighting in the war on terror and have since left the service. Personally, I don't know how to feel anymore. When I was still in the Army, I had enormous pride in our accomplishments. Our brothers and sisters we lost along the way sacrificed everything they had. So much has been sacrificed and yet our civilian counterparts seem more interested in tabloid news and our continued efforts are rarely considered news-worthy. A lot of precious blood was spilled only to see these same liberated cities falling back into enemy hands. I continue to run into veterans who are still struggling to find jobs and feel like their sacrifices were made in vain. No one seems to realize what we went through and what we were able to accomplish while in uniform. But now that we have returned to the civilian ranks, many of us feel like we don't belong and that we still have unfinished business. It is a challenge to be proud of our past accomplishments when we can't even land a civilian job that doesn't even have 1/10 of the responsibilities we were used to. Do you have suggestions on how we might be able to find closure? What would you tell these veterans to keep their spirits up who feel this emptyness inside? Although quite early historically to categorize either counterinsurgency campaign as a success or failure, most indicators would suggest that our COIN-focused strategy was, at best, not a great success. How do you characterize the U.S. pursuit of counterinsurgency as a strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan? Success? Failure? My question is in reference to the apparent crippling of the NCO corps. When I was coming up in the army if I was sick, my first line would send me home for the day. I do not see this happening any more. Working in a clinic I see this regularly, the NCO's aren't trusted to make this call. The soldier is sent to the clinic for a doctors note. This is merely a small portion of the weakening of the NCO corps that I have seen as of the last 5 or more years. I just can help but think had we not sent large numbers "boots on the ground" and focused primarily on special ops cells supplemented by some air support if that would have been just as effective (or more so) in controlling the threat of terrorism from foreign sources. You spoke of a time during an NTC rotation following an AAR or as you called it “leadership by humiliation”, where you felt you were a failure and had let your Battalion Commander down. Your Battalion Commander, however said “Stanley, I thought you did great!” and in this one sentence your commander was able to make a significant impact on you, teaching you an important lesson about leadership.

This story reminded me of a time when SPC McCloud, a young paratrooper was based at Camp Syverson, Iraq as an Intelligence Analyst for CJSOTF-AP in 2007. I was sitting in our newly built DFAC as I did every day for lunch when then, LTG McChrystal, walked in. You walked in without an entourage, got some food, and sat down right next to me and another SPC. Of course we were quite nervous at the time seeing a 3 star general sit down next to us in an act that was not protocol for most General Officers. I don’t even remember what was discussed but this one small gesture left a lasting impact on me as a young soldier knowing that we have senior leaders who are grounded and truly care about the troops.

In this TED talk and in your new book you talk about flattening the network, transparent leadership, being adaptive, listening to and learning from subordinates (reverse mentorship), and an inversion of expertise. What single piece of leadership advice would you give to post 9/11 Soldiers who are quickly becoming tomorrow’s leaders in this fast paced world that we live in today?

Thank you for your time sir and I look forward to reading you new book!

Leadership lessons from General (Retired) Stanley McChrystal - What did you take away from his...

General (Retired) Stanley McChrystal gives a TED Talk on military lessons learned from his 34 years of service. Underplayed are the critical role of the civil-military relationship and the impact of the kind of war being fought.

That leads to the second argument in which Ricks raises some fundamental questions: Does the Army's system produce the Generals the nation needs? Does the Army's "incentive system" create too many risk-averse Generals? Are Army generals overly focused on tactics and too rigid in applying doctrine? To what degree did transformation prepare the Army for today's wars? Are all, or some, Army Generals too slow to learn and adapt? What's the relationship of tactical battlefield performance to success as a general? These questions are fundamental to the Army, for its training, education, and leader development programs produce Colonels, and Army systems select the Colonels who become Generals and the Generals who serve as senior leaders. - See more at: http://www.understandingwar.org/otherwork/what-makes-great-general#sthash.0RNhs9O8.dpuf SFC Joe S. Those currently serving will have the option to transfer to the new 401k system or be grandfathered and remain on the old 20 years for a pension system.

The biggest Pro is that it gives some retirement benefits to SMs that do not serve 20 years, the biggest complaint has been that it gets rid of retirement pensions.

What I would like to know is if you think this new proposal has gone far enough. Media, in general, can be a good and bad thing at the same time. It can of course help with propaganda and get some of the opposition to join our side. It can also have a negative effect on missions, from convoys to patrols. With new recruits being allowed to have cell phones in basic training and several more privileges in their AIT, it seems we are pushing them towards using social media more. During your career, have you seen a negative correlation between the use of social media and our military? With that, do you feel that as we are giving the younger Soldiers more privileges, they are having more of a "I am entitled to that" type of mentality? As with the night raids in Afghanistan there were a number of narratives in response to the civilian deaths. With the military saying one thing, media reporting another, and local and domestic politicos expressing their views can you explain your decision process in how you managed this particular aspect of the SOF operations and what advice would you offer to other senior leaders in how to balance military/political objectives. They that create the same needs in communities and work for the responders just not at the same pace or with the same resources or attention from the media or action from governments local, state or federal.

Cities like Detroit have thousands of homes that need to come down before anything can be built. New investment won't come until the blight is gone. After forty years on neglect the communities between downtown and the suburbs are devastated and need relief as if a disaster happened and nobody came to help.

With over 25,000 members spread across the country and the world with Team Rubicon Global, how do members remain engaged with the organization and each other to maintain mission readiness and expand their profession options?

Beyond the regional short term and specific trainings. Can you see training missions to provide a boot camp for disaster response in communities of blight where massive debris dead tree removal and demolition is required? I served as your VTC controller during my time in Balad, Iraq in 2007. It was fast paced and long hours but enjoyed every minute of it. I again, worked with you on the Joint Staff while your were Director. I was working in Chairman's Comm and stopped to say hello to you in the hallway. I served at Camp Integrity in 2013 with SOCOM for CJ6 and worked for MG Miller/CSM Stigall. I was impressed with their implementation of the organization/operations structure as it mirrored everything I experienced in Iraq. It seemed new and foreign to several folks and I was able to help explain the implementation and provide CJ6 with some change management. I would like to ask how that organization structure came to be? Was it born out of necessity or developed over time through trial and error? It seemed to me to be the most effective and efficient means to run operations as all key players were in the same room and utilizing VTC capabilities to communicate in real time and included everyone from planners to those conducting the operations. I can think of no formidable force in the world that sends their women to the front lines to do the business of killing men. That is our primary goal as an Army and defense force is to fight and win wars. That is done by killing the men of those other countries. I do think it says something about a country that would send our women into harms way purposefully. I understand chance contact and women have performed admirably in those circumstances. However that is not the same as hunting men. I think we are going in the wrong direction when we expect our women to "ruck up and head to the mountains, jungle, forest, city...etc etc....to close with and destroy the enemy." All I have heard from top generals is the party line and it honestly sickens me to see top generals implementing this instead of standing their ground. All in the name of "fairness". War isn't fair, nor should it be. The military is not a social experiment and it shouldn't be used as one. As a fellow SOF soldier I wonder what your thoughts are on this matter. I know a rambled a bit there but this subject gets me all amped up. Thanks for your time and service sir. My question as follows: Being a student of military history US Civil War plus and being a vet of two tours on the water in Nam it seems a lot of the complexity in our current conflicts stems not so much from the bad guys, we can always beat them, but by the micro management from DC. President Johnson did a "great job" of that in Nam down to picking daily targets. I feel there are too many lawyers involved in the war making process. Mistakes happen in combat as you know but we can not make the rules so complex that our forces are hindered in carry out the mission including force protection. You do not have to answer the following but I feel some of our military leaders tend to toe the line and not give the civilian leadership frank advice. I know of a few who have and where are they. I was wondering why is it that our 4-Star Commanders, both CNO/Chiefs of Staff and the Regional Combatant Commanders, are unwilling to step up and question unconstitutional orders in keeping with their oaths of office? One such instance is the unlawful action around Libya, where the action was not authorized by Congress. Obviously, it is inappropriate for the tactical commanders to refuse orders to participate when their fellow officers are committed, so they/we look to the guys with the big stars to go to bat for them. The Constitution and the War Powers Act are very clear: the Commander-in-Chief gets his authority to order the armed forces into harm's way when war is declared, the action is authorized by Congress, the United States has been attacked or there is a clear and present danger of its imminent attack. If there is a clear and present danger of the United States being attacked, the President has temporary authority to order the armed forces into harm's way for 90 days, during which he must get Congressional authorization or stand down. Integrating teams with big box or branded units has an appeal to it. The book mixes the great man theory of leadership with behind the scene hobby farmer, cultivating, nurturing plants in the garden and the maintenance of pulling weeds. Eyes on...Hands off...I get that.

Was the rubric gardening role predictable and measureable at all levels of the organization, client, customer, and partners alike? How would the gardener leadership style fit in the Leadership/Managerial Grid? This is a novel idea.
I think that a comparison study between gardener and chess player may be worth the effort. Using the chess player as the controller or standard role. Your thoughts? Stanley McChrystal
SUBJECT: To Make America Great Again with 5th Wave High Performance

Now, when you grow weary of being corporate America’s favorite performing seal, me and you and the 75th Ranger Learning Community can do for America with The Points of Light Program what I did for Jim Kimsey in 1979 as described in The Tools of Transformation. You can place this data in an equivalent category of data as that contained in The Men Who Stare at Goats. This story is evidence to my claim that I was using the same performance technology to run The Exchange, Ltd that Frank Burns was developing with the First Earth Battalion and Force Delta Leadership Program.
The Harvard Business leadership model is about 70 years behind the leadership model of the US Army Ranger School. And West Point. This leadership gap began to manifest in 1947, but the take-over of Harvard by the SDS in 1968 accelerated the process and this gap has now become an economic crises. The Points of Light Program will fix this before the 2020 election.
I would prefer to work with Bernie. He is already using the economic models of 5th Wave High Performance and is demonstrating that he understands the power of the community organizer as a force multiplier and capitalist tool
Now, I am no fan of Trump, but I would prefer to work with him than trying to bring Hillary Clinton up to speed, although this memo may serve to help her get her head out of her ass in the same way I jerked Kimsey back on course in 1979.
In terms of Trump, if he will deposit $10 million with Speaker Paul Ryan as seed capital for the Deconcini Deficit Reduction Trust, I will train 30 people of his choosing as the Steering Committee for the Donald Trump Learning Community. An advantage to him, he can include anyone who ever enrolled in Trump University including exclusively Trump University alumni or student body,
I’ll do the same for Bernie and Hill as soon as they deposit $10 million with Speaker Paul Ryan on the same basis. The Points of Light is a venture capital process. In no small measure, the motto of the program is “Money talks, bullshit walks”.
I want your business to do the same thing for your current book. This program is designed to supercharge Trickle Down Economics. I don’t care if you ever give me a penny, because the program enriches the synergies that flow through my life space in various ways. I am already more or less set for life, as long as the economy continues to recover after the disaster of 30 years of Tea Party Conservative economic policies. This program will give Trump the data he needs to over-fulfill his aspirations as President.
Timing is everything, My advice to graduate of the US Army Command and Staff College to pursue a similar MBA at Wharton as Trump’s. It has nothing to do with Trump, but the epistemology of the two schools are almost perfectly organic by themselves. It’s what I am saying about me and Frank Burns: There were only two people in the world doing what Frank Burns in 1979 and I was the other one. But we are complimentary models. His model is perfectly designed for the socialism of the Army community but inappropriate for civilian communities, while mine is literally based on the business model Dick iHeidenberger employed to open The Bottom Line on Eye Street, NW and is appropriate for civilian and military communities.. Frank and I were a perfect compliment, but he was too cool for school. I wanted to do for him what I did for Jim Kimsey, but he pulled rank on me in a particular way and Iust said “Fuck you, shit for brains. You are about to crash and burn, big time, because you don’t have any idea how business works than Ted Cruz or Paul Ryan or Ayn Rand, but if you want to run things like Jeff Bezos is running Amazon knock yourself out.” And that’s what happened. What happened to Frank Burns is trickling down directly for the damage Bezos leaves in his wake through his bureaucracy to the warehouse workers who can get fired for saying “Teamsters “ on company time or property. 1LT Tom Wilson Sun, 08 May 2016 09:10:22 -0400 2016-05-08T09:10:22-04:00 2015-05-11T12:07:24-04:00
