My wife and I stayed the night at a hotel and were leaving it and getting on the highway. I am in the lead with the U-Haul towing my car while she is trailing behind with the other vehicle. As we are finishing the onramp to merge, I look up and see mom and dad Canadian geese with their ducklings, taking their sweet time crossing across a 4 lane highway as if we are not there and right in front of me. I slammed on my brakes, partly because I would have felt at tad bit guilty and partly because I didn't want to clean bird guts and feathers off the U-Haul. Damn Canadian geese. As soon as I got out of a cast on my leg, I got shipped to Korea. I walked with a cane, a hurt leg and 8 heavy bags and no help through security checkpoints. What got me miffed was the fact I also had to give up the cane and limp through those gates just to make sure I wasn't going to blow up the plane! As we unpacked, the apartment was so cold because the utilities had not been turned on yet. Exhausted from the eight hour drive, we were ready to melt into the inflatable mattress. I plugged it in, and nothing happened. I looked at the directions, and it said, "Charge eight hours before use. Twelve hours before first use." So we basically slept on the floor using our coats as blankets. So she returned about a month later with my parents, she wrote, "Plug it in! Plug it in!" I knew exactly what she meant. You don't make that mistake twice!

2) When I was moving overseas in three weeks notice, I was super stressed. My orders were taking their sweet time to be cut, and I was anxious about getting out of my lease on time to not owe an extra month and the movers said that they weren't coming until after I was already supposed to be overseas! After the movers came and packed up all of my stuff and left,I realized that there were some items that shouldn't have been put into storage. Having to handle all of us alone while I am still in trial for work and having no idea what to do or who to call, my XO helped me figure this out. As I drove up to the movers, I explained what I needed to do. My 24 boxes of stuff from my one-bedroom apt were packed into four large boxes. I ended up opening 21 out of the 24 boxes before I found what I needed. I offered the employee t$8, which was all that I had in my wallet. He politely refused my offer and said, "You weren't the first person that this happened to, and you won't be the last!!"

Both events were very upsetting at the time, but enough time has passed that they
make me laugh now. I learned a lot in the four years there however wasnt prepared in the least to give up our home , get rid of half of our stuff and go live in a hotel for six weeks while waiting for a house to open up. So hard explaining that to two young children while to grasp this myself. Bragg. While awaiting his household goods shipment, quarters stayed in the guest house. After a couple of weeks hit me up about how long it took for my household goods to arrive. He was moving into base housing in a couple of days.

I told him once we got housing, our household goods almost beat us to the base. Well, here he was a month and a half after arrival with no shipment. I spoke to my NCO chain of command and per CSM Moss, was told to help him get this sorted out. After a few phone calls and a trip through post-HQ they told him his furniture was awaiting delivery in Fayetteville GA, yes that is in Georgia. A little paperwork and he was told his household goods would be delivered as soon as he had moved into quarters. All good and for my help he and his wife invited me and mine out to diner. At diner his wife explained how stressful it was for her and the kids being stuck in basically a hotel for so long.

Flash forward two weeks and Gary and family are in government quarters, sans household goods and Gary has gotten orders to jump school to join the Army's elite. The bad news is his wife has submitted the option of returning to her parent's house if their household goods haven't arrived. A cold breeze was emanating from her direction. So after dropping off his kids with my wife, off we go to post-HQ with his wife in tow. Why yes transportation knew where his property was, Fayetteville AR, as in Arkansas. At that point post transportation became eligible for hazardous duty pay. Said wife went nuclear. I was unaware that their household goods shipment had originated from just across the border in Oklahoma, over 2 months prior.

To cut to the chase, after calming her down promises were made for delivery by Friday. On said Friday as we were being dismissed from Bn formation the CSM called me over and asked if I had gotten the issue solved with transportation. I said the truck was due today. When upon he informed me that was good, and since we were off why not take my team and help them get settled in. We could take the rest of the day off. Yeah, beer day.

Needless to say, years later when their next PCS move came around Gary's wife stenciled every box, barrel, etc with their new assignment location.
