Some people are real idiots... I wish her punishment were to have her mouth duct-taped...

Florida police have opened an animal cruelty investigation into a Facebook user who posted a picture of her dog with its mouth duct-taped shut.

Katie Brown first put up the disturbing photo Friday morning, with the caption, "This is what happens when you dont shut up!!!"

It has been shared over 238,000 times as of Saturday afternoon, and police in South Daytona say they have been overwhelmed by messages and emails — receiving about 32,000 calls about the post.

Brown has since written a follow-up message on Facebook: "Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasnt barked since... POINT MADE!!!"

People from across the world have responded to the photo, calling for action to be taken against the pet owner.

South Daytona police confirmed to NBC News that they have opened an active animal cruelty investigation.

Brown's Facebook lists her as a South Daytona resident who attended school at Central Connecticut State University. Police have determined that Brown was out of state for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend when she posted the photo, but they will be contacting her when she returns to the beach community.

Brown couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The city of South Daytona said Saturday morning that they "have information to indicate that the dog is OK at this time" and thanked the public for their outpouring of concern.

"The police have all the information and have been working this case through the night," the city said on its Facebook page, adding, "Rest assured that a full investigation will be done and appropriate action will be taken."

She is criminally stupid .. and with luck has no, nor will ever have children.

As to her criminally abusive treatment to her pet...... Id be happy to give a graphic, hand on demonstration as to why it was improper, abusive, and not an ethical training technique. Id guess at the end of the demonstration, where she is an active participant, she would agree.

She deserves to be prosecuted for animal cruelty. If your dog is excessively barking, get off your backside and go find out why. It's unbelievable that she thinks its ok! Grabbing a dog by their muzzle can be just as effective and without being abusive and harmful like duct tape. Someone should duct tape her mouth shut!

I think it is funny that there is a great outpouring of concern for a picture of a dog with duct tape on its mouth when I have seen some really messed up pictures of what people do to there kids on Facebook and no concern is sent in for these kids. I'm sure the police are working through the night on this case and if they are what a waste of man power when they could be out catching all the drunk drivers, kidnappers, and drug dealers that are more important in the city.

Why don't they duct tape the former dog owner's eyes, let her out in the middle of the freeway and let her find her way to safety? If she makes it, shes free to go....if she doesn't then karma has dealt its justice!
