Ever have your online identity taken/stolen as a servicemember so that others commit fraud because you are in a trusted profession?

This is the second time while on deployment that folks have taken photos of me from Facebook and created accounts on different websites and social media to mislead and take advantage of people. I was contacted this deployment by a officer of the law who suspected that the person communicating to his wife and mother was not me. This is seriously a nuisance and issue for my family and job.

Have you applied all security measures toward your account? Check your privacy settings, make your settings to you only see them or your friends who have already sent you request and were approved, make a good password that only YOU would get. Also just as a safe side, remove your pic of you in uniform; that there is a giveaway for anyone to take advantage. Replace it with a family gathering, goofy pic of you and the kids. Don't give the enemy anything he can use.

I know you're proud to serve, as am I but you have to remove anything that would convince anyone you're military. Keep the enemy blind.

When checking some of this, I found a near doppelganger of myself,, that knows some of the same people. That was weird.

CW5 Sam R. Baker I never had any issues with my social media and I don't care much about it, but what happened to me was someone I thought it was a friend(Soldier) went and bought some expensive tires and rims, put it all on my name and I had no clue about this until it was time for my clearance investigation when they told me I owed thousands of dollars on crap that I would not even buy and that's why I could not get a clearance.

Someone started to once, then they read my posts here and other places, realized what I was worth and gave it back and said they were above stealing my identity. I was hurt but could not argue with their logic?

The only time I've ever had an issue with someone trying to steal my identity was when someone, like you're describing above, tried to use my name to set up an account.

Unfortunately for this person, I work with computers a lot, and I traced their connection, looked them up in the public ISP database (if you're gonna be black hat, folks, take your stuff off of the public access list), and reported their home address to the FBI, along with all of the data that I'd collected regarding their attempt to set up a false identity under my name.
