We tend to have attributes of "all of the above". Lately we've been trending more toward socialist with more nanny state stuff. Constitutional Republic wasn't listed but that was a start that didn't stick. About the only Republic term that gets news traction are California and Texas that joined as Republics, hence can split into other states theoretically. A compliant population tends to let the Government "know betters" take freedom and money away. It's getting to the point where people think Constitutional types must live on Ruby Ridge. A great divide between what our country is vs. what it was vs. what it should be.

There's an argument out there that the Founders looked at religious, martial, and commercial governments. The first two were tossed because they always lead to tyranny so they actually set up the Constitution to describe the nation more as a Commercial Republic; I guess as good a term as any. Then the Amendments played catch-up on individual liberties, an attempt to dictate morality that failed, and then some bureaucratic clean up in more recent years. When all is said and done, it's whatever the Supreme Court says we are ultimately. That can be different from what any given word meant way back when. CAPT Kevin B. After years of research I determined that it has always been, and still is, a Constitutional Democracy. It abides by Statute, or Written Law: a Law unto itself. Murder is whatever the Statute says it is. A true Republic operates under Common, or Natural Law: the Law of Nature and Nature's God. In a Republic the Citizen is Sovereign; the Government is a Subject. In a Democracy the Government is Sovereign and the Citizen is the Subject.

With the exception of Louisiana (French Statute Law), all the States were Republics until 1933 when they defaulted on their loans to the Federal Reserve Bank which is a Private International Corporation. The Federal Reserve Board regulates the Bank in the US, but its members are appointed from the Bank (conflict of interest?). Before 1933, it was against Common Law to murder someone. After 1933 it was against Section 130 of the NYS Penal Code. A person under Common, or Natural Law is responsible for his actions; under Statute Law he is responsible to the Code, whatever that may be.

If you come to my home and do damage, you are responsible (Common Law) to make it right. If your my child (Statute Law) I make rules for you to follow and spank you if you don't.

Democracy is another name for Socialism. Our present form is Socialism is similar to that of Germany during WWII: highly regulated private ownership of property and the means of production. Communism is government ownership of both property and the means of production. The difference is that in Socialism we live in highly regulated private homes while in Communism we live in government housing developments.

Soviet Union Communism failed ~ 1989. I saw a short paragraph in the back of a local paper reporting that Russia was converting to our form of property ownership and government. It appears that China has done the same.
