E-5 11B looking to reclass to 89B. How do you like your job?

I’m looking to reclass out of the infantry. I just picked up my SGT. I have been in 4.5 years and looking for something different. How do you you 89bs like your job? Thanks for the input.

Just another route that might help you out. If you're active, try tracking down the 89Bs in your BN or BDE. They may be able to show you what the do on a daily basis and give you a real world snapshot. Out of the 3 I know, 2 loved their jobs though. Hope that helps bro.

I love my job as an 89B. Super versatile and there are many aspects of the job. I’ve only met one 89 who was a prior 11b. He had a “it could be worse” way of looking at things.. so I guess it’s not as bad as Infantry when it comes to the suck meter.

When considering reclassifying, you should look at the progression. This past year, out of 181 only 29 were selected for E7. Less than 3 are usually selected for Promotion for E8 and E9 each year which makes it extremely competitive. To me, that’s the only downside of the MOS.

I am also a SSG 89B. Only been in 7 years and I’m fast tracking as hell.
On the trail at the moment but should be off soon.
Worked at Ft Hood ASP, fort Irwin as the ammo guy for OPS now I’m at benning as a DS.
The job itself is not bad at all. It’s what you make of it.

Several of my NCO’s when coming up were formerly infantry. Never heard them complain.
I enjoyed my time and would probably do it again.

Your job will vary depending on the position you're in as well as the unit you go to. Switching from an aviation unit to a stryker brigade was a huge eye opener for me. You'll need to relearn how to store, issue, turn in, transport all the different types of ammunition for every type of unit (as well as babysit the battalions who do not know how to do the right thing even after reminding them continuously). You also get to learn about all of the different weapon systems. There are also some courses you can take as an 89B that you can use in the civilian world if you decide to get out. As a Sergeant you may be put in an ATHP section, many SSG's are put etiher in charge of the ATHP or work in the Land/Ammo in the S3. Staff Sergeants and Sergeants First Class will run logistics and inspections for the brigade. There are many different learning opportunities, it rarely gets stagnant and there is always something going on. For myself, I enjoy learning about (as well as holding and messing with) different types of explosives. The bigger the boom the more excited I get... like messing with excaliburs and hellfires.
