Does being in a First Sergeant position that is outside your PMOS help you or hurt you when being looked at for CSM?

I have a few classmates at the Sergeants Major Course that were CMF 11 and 88 and worked as HHC/T 1SGs...they were selected. ;)

Since you're asking about CSM and not SGM, then the answer would be that it is "considered".

Since the CSL can place you in Operating or Generating - you're experience is weighed as to where the Army can best use you.

I would surmise that it is would be more difficult to be high on the Operating CSM OML if you didn't have any Operating First Sergeant time. The same with the Generating OML.

Of course, we all want to think that our records/history is looked at sufficiently to determine where our S/K/As can be best utilized.

I would have to agree with all answers. The selection board for us is looking for the well rounded leader. If CSM is you goal, 1SG time will increase your changes. When I was at the Academy our current SMA briefed us on that very topic. He mentioned that his intent was to have all graduates (US Army of course) complete at least one year staff before being selected for CSM. The current issue with that is there are not enough SGM/CSMs, who meet his criteria, to fill the open CSM slots each year. That is why they allow USASMA students to compete. Class 62 had about have their class selected either Primary or Secondary for the CSL. Class 63 had about 100 less than 62 but a large majority of that could have been because many did not compete. Any hard position that you do well in will benefit your chances of being selected for that next level.

For 11Zs 12 months time is considered qualified while 24-36 months is best qualified. I can completely understand how you feel this may negatively impact your chances for selection but echo the previous comments from CSM Maynard and suggest you stay the course.

I think it should help you. The whole challenging and diversity factor should come into play. My MOS only has one authorized position. I was in a 68W5M position for 10 months but HRC was trying to pull me at 90 days even with stabilization. Kick butt and take names while you are outside the box and it should reflect positively.
