Does AR 670-1 cover the use of aftermarket civilian body armor?

AR 670-1 doesn't usually cover field gear as I remember.

I always thought you could only wear the IBA or IOTV but in garrison you see people wearing all kinds of different plate carriers and chest rigs.

Depending on units you can wear specific chest rigs as long as the are the right color. This authorization is typical unit specific not army wide.

If you can wear plate carriers (I thought were for higher elevations), that may be as good as it gets.

I don't want to sound condescending, however civilian body armor is not up to mil spec despite what the label indicates..why would you want to wear armor that, at best, may stop a 9mm round?

NO ist doesn't, but you are supposed to wear issue only. The common sense answer is you are to wear what is issued and allowed only, should you be wearing a civilian copy and get injured due to poor quality of not meeting mil spec then that can and may lead to bigger problems for anyone that has GEARDO syndrome.

Big Army put a squash on the non issued Body Armor in the middle of OIF. That type of info wouldn't be in 670-1 anyway.
