I think it was just an incorrect holdover term used by the older "Brown Shoe" senior AF members who were still serving post WWII around the time the AAF became an independent branch of the service in 1947.  We still had a few USAF Warrant Officers around then too! We became Security Police in the 67-68 time frame. Later when I worked Law Enforcement as a Desk Sergeant I would not even answer the phone Security Police, I said Base Police.
