Does anyone know if Air National guard will pay for flights to another state to drill or would that come out of my pocket?

At the end of my army guard contract thinking of going air guard please no remarks about switching branches is a bad idea yes I’m aware it’s difficult

What you are asking is if the Air National Guard has IDT Reimbursement. Yes, the Air Guard has IDT but the program is restricted to certain Officer and Enlisted skill sets and distance from HOR to unit.

Normally, how the IDT works is you pay out of pocket for travel expenses and then submit for reimbursement.

I would highly suggest you ask this question of the Air Guard Recruiter you are working with. Also, I suggest you find the nearest Air Guard unit to your HOR and submit this RFI to them.

Reserve and guard use to pay a certain amount but it was going away when I retired in 2019

Yes, it is authorized.
Way more often than not, it is NOT funded in the Guard, Air or Army.
It is usually funded in the Reserves.

Start with finding the kind of job you want in a unit (Guard or Reserve) that is within a reasonable or affordable commute.

Yes and no! The problem is you are dealing with state budgets when it comes to the Guard. The best solution would be finding a unit in your state closer to your home.

Air National Guard units will definitely consider you for membership, and usually provide lodging while you train, but transportation is usually up to you for training, but sometimes reimbursed when you are mobilized or on orders. Best to ask specifics with a unit you are considering to cross train to.

No comments about the switch - we want to keep you in the Guard regardless of if it’s army or air. You will be responsible for getting yourself to drill. Annual Training pays mileage from HOR.
Every state has an air guard unit, so I’d look at that first. I know of several Airmen who come in from out of state because of the job they chose, but end up spending every penny they make on the travel. It really depends on what you are in it for.

The Air Guard units I served in in Ohio and Michigan did not fund flights ect. The Air Reserve unit that I’m in in Indiana does- it allows $500 for flight and rental car a month and also pays mileage to drive if the Aieman is over 150 miles. Check with the unit you are interested in to verify if they authorize mileage and/or flights.
