does anyone know how to set up a cac reader on a laptop?

I’m purchasing a laptop and cac reader at ait and I’m not tech savvy at all.

An outstanding resource is the following website: https://militarycac.com/. The site is run by an retired Army Warrant Officer and provide excellent resources and guides to setup and/or troubleshoot CAC / PKI issues. This is not an official Army website but it does provide links to many official software repositories.

It should just recognize it if you have a Windows computer. There are usually plug and play after that. You can get on more websites with Windows using a CAC reader than with Apple computer.

CAC reader will automatically install on a Windows machine, as the drivers are already in the system.

However, depending on the version of Windows there may be other requirements.

I would say the best public source of step-by-step instructions for complete setup, including installing DOD certificates, can be found on militarycac.com.

If it's Windows 10, it should just be plug and play. You may have to install the DOD PKI, but you can download that from any of the service portals a I believe. It's definitely on the front page of the Air Force portal.
