Does anyone know a way to find out where a Naval Ship was on a specific Date?

With all the talk of Joni Ernst and her status, I started looking at the regional conflict dates, and 11/11/1998 popped up.

It was a really odd date, and it happens to pop up close to when my last MEU was leaving the Gulf, so I figured I'd ask if anyone knew how to check the dates a specific ship was in an area or not.

The three ships in our group were LHD-2, LPD-6, and LSD-36.

I know we were in the Gulf on 10/31/1998 (I re-enlisted on that day), and I know we drew Tax exempt the following month. Just don't know where we were actually at.

This is more a curiosity thing, as I've been to Kuwait, and the 1991 date covers me.

Mine from a different deployment has a nice map of everywhere we went.

The folks at Hazegray.org could possibly help. That recently wouldn't be in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships (DANFS), which has the Tabular Record of Movements (TROMs) for many USN vessels. They may be able to point to some information.

Also cruise books, and sometimes some of the ships will have facebook pages for other veterans that could help.

There is another source of a ship's location you can try...the ship's deck log. You can get in contact with the Naval Historical Center on the Navy Yard in DC and ask about access. They are responsible for collecting deck logs from all ships. From what I remember, the last two years are maintained on site then they are transferred to the National Achieves.

The deck logs are legal records so, besides historical significance, they are maintained in case of a investigation or other legal matters.
