Do you write someone off after one bad mistake?

Sunday night I had way too much to drink and posted things that I am ashamed of. Things that are not indicative of myself or how I think at all. I am not making excuses -- I made the decision to drink. I apologize to RP members whom I offended, directly or indirectly.

It will not happen again.

My ex wife wrote me off. But I digress. You state you wrote things you shouldn't have under intoxication.....but here you are with the intestinal fortitude to make amends for your errors. That takes character and courage. I'm good with you.

It would depend.....
If said intoxication allowed for the speaking of "mean things" no, that's recoverable... sticks and stones and all that.....
If the level of intoxication and inhibition it brings with it allowed for some inner feelings, memories, thoughts and desires to come forth and we learned the intoxicated person was coveting the neighbor's minor daughter, plotting the death of a former spouse, recalling the terror they felt after sobering up and realizing the damage on the family minivan was from hitting some guy walking home on the side of the freeway last year...then no, that's not recoverable

I must have missed out on all the gun, SN Greg Wright. Good for owning up to your mistakes and identifying the problem. I am often on RallyPoint with a glass of bourbon. Anything more than a glass or two gets me a little hazy. I start to choose my words very carefully because I identify that I am not of "clean mind."

I agree with him. Knowing you like I think I do, there is no way I can see you really writing something that is offensive. Now had it been a Marine, Air Force, or Coast Guard joke, I would've joined in, but once you talk about the Army, now it's on! But seriously it takes balls and integrity to come on and apologize. Not many will do it, and most would rather keep going knowing they're wrong, than just chill and tell you I made a mistake. You're good in my book bro.

One mistake should not cause you to written off, it might dig a hole so deep that you can not recover from in your military career. Posting to a blog and being in error is just a sign of immaturity, learn from your mistake and move on. Water that has flowed past you is no longer your concern, let it go. Dwell on the future not the past. We have all been there at one time or another. Semper Fi.

SN Greg Wright, welcome to elite membership to the Club of "Damn, I wish I hadn't said that..."! I've eaten so much crow over the years, I'm starting to develop a taste for it.

If we each are truly honest with ourselves, deep down where no one likes to look in themselves, we ALL have things in our past we're not proud of and wish we could either erase or do differently. The trick is to learn from those mistakes and try to not repeat them. "Let he that is without sin cast the first stone." You'll get no stones heaved your way from me. Use the situation to become a better person. Repeated incidents of the same behavior are no longer "mistakes" but show the true character of the offender.

From someone you don't expect anything to happen (even as small as this), you have to take into considerations of what could be involved. It's also depending on how the person is reacting to what they did and how they are able to amend or try to change from the bad situation.

You're manning up to your mistakes and apologizing for your actions.
You're good with me.
Just don't let drinking get the best of you. We've lost a lot of shipmates and SMs from this.

I’ve been written off for a minor mistake or not answering fast enough or giving a complete answer in accordance with the FM or a bad mistake or not being a GOB or being a quiet professional or saying if you say it behind my back to my subordinates rather than discuss it with me you’re trying to create a mutinous situation and you’re afraid of me you do not deserve the rank you were probably handed based on poorly perceived potential rather than actual duty performance.
I write off no one for a mistake. I write off no one for admitting they are wrong. I write off no one for being upfront about what they perceive as an issue.
