Those processes vary by state within parties and by parties within states. So a citizen's voice in nominee selection may be louder in a state where both parties have open primaries and one could theoretically vote for nominees in each party. Unless, of course, one of the parties awards delegate votes proportionally and the other awards all delegate votes to the candidate who garners the most votes. In the first case the voter who sides with a candidate with 35% of the vote could get represented by 35% of the delegates. But if the second scenario applies the 35%er gets no voice if another candidate comes up with a 45% share. But wait, there's more; a party may also have party appointed super delegates who are beholden to no voters and may change their candidate allegiance depending on what side of the bed they got up on that day. And the parties' convention committees can change the convention rules for who needs what sort of numbers(majority vs plurality vs number of signs n the floor) to win the nomination without any input from party members.

You know, come to think of it, it's a wonder anyone who gets nominated represents anything close to the "will of the people". And none of this has anything to do with how folks get appointed (not ever elected) to the Supreme Court bench.
