Here We Go Again: Every Year At 9/11 Time, TV Overdoes It

The annual tributes to 9/11 just might be my least favorite group of TV shows all year. Taking them all in is a sad, maudlin experience. It's as if the TV powers that be feel we'll forget about 9/11unless they hector us about it.

T.V. sigh, they will milk any thing for ratings. It gets difficult to take them seriously anymore.

This is a double edged sword. I think we need to remember 9/11. It needs to remain in the nation's conscience so we don't forget why we are here and what we spent the past 15 years doing. I don't, however, believe the media cares about this and are in it for the ratings.

No way TV overdoes 9/11, Colonel. I've been retired for 7 years now, and the events of 9/11 largely defined my career. Every year, I record and watch all of the 9/11 shows for a couple of reasons. I was an Army Blackhawk pilot on 9/11, and my unit was in Bosnia. We saw the events live, as did most people, on TV. 15 months later, we were in Afghanistan. In 2 tours, I had the distinct privilege of carrying too many of our fallen heroes from various FOB's to Bagram. Watching those shows reminds me that it wasn't a mindless, unnecessary thing those guys paid for, that there was a meaning for it all. Those shows also help me show my kids why I was gone so much, and why our nations history is what it is.

The media overdoes everything. Obviously we should never forget 9/11 but the obsessive media coverage around that date is purely for ratings. I suppose the media was probably the same following establishment of Memorial Day or Veterans Day and 9/11 coverage will dwindle with time as it has for those days. It's only been 15 years and that's relatively recent in the scheme of things.

If the media is doing it because they get high ratings, that means a lot of people watch them. Duh. So blaming the media for giving the population what they want to see on 9/11 seems very odd to me.

Just as soon as we forget Pearl Harbor, I suppose it's OK. More lives lost during 9/11 and we aren't covering it too much, I think not. We still have people dying from the effects of the cowardly attack on our nation. I watched it happen live on TV and it is ingrained in my mind permanently.

It makes me wonder sometimes...

Why has 9/11 coverage been allowed to totally eclipse any recognition of the lives lost at the greatest act of domestic terrorism in this country in Oklahoma City?

The way I look at it the loss of life in Oklahoma City was just as wrong, it was still an attack on civilians. The fact that an American former service member did it does make it a lot less palatable to accept, but it doesn't negate the loss of life... especially of the children.

All loss of civilian life in this country to terrorism is equal in my opinion... so shouldn't all of them be remembered? Or has the American public shoved that tragedy under the rug for a higher body count and because an American committed it? If we are going to acknowledge the loss of American lives to acts terrorism then maybe we should include all lives lost, not just solely those lost on 9/11.

Yes, 2,977 lives was a huge loss.... but 169 Americans lost their lives on that perfect April morning in 1995. Six years and a higher body count doesn't negate the loss for their families.
