When i enlisted at the tail end of the Vietnam War service members were treated roughly by the populace in this nation. Thankfully in many ways the nation has matured in terms of its treatment of service members.
My response is intended to be a general response to the way the service members of the military has been treated over time. Up until the late 19th century the military was considered to be the scum of the earth. Enlisted men were from the dregs of society and only officers held any positive status.
For at least the past century many militaries have been composed of honorable men who sometimes engaged in dishonorable activity. Does the military do that? Reasonable people could disagree. I have seen a large and growing number of cases where the mere accusation of wrongdoing brings relief and early retirement due to "lost confidence" in their ability to lead. The rights of victims of crimes must be upheld, but so must those of the accused. We seem to have developed a habit of punishing before proof of guilt is established. If allegations are proven, then by all means, hang them from the yard arm.
I have a right to be treated equally regardless of sex, gender, national origin, religion, and now orientation. I think we do this pretty well in the military by and large, but I am disturbed by the amount of times I have seen EO brandished as a cudgel to cow commanders into not holding incompetents to account. As with accusations of malfeasance, accusations of bigotry or prejudice immediately brings the heat on the accused, even before there is a shred of evidence.

I learned early in my career that you don't make your move to bust a problem too soon. Investigate, let the facts come out, keep the disputing parties away from one another while you figure out what's what, and generally the truth comes out and justice can be served.
