Do you think a war could be triggered over a fake video? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/do-you-think-a-war-could-be-triggered-over-a-fake-video

Based on current Technology there’s an app that can create anyone’s face on your face. I’m not going to get into to much detail, but I want a study going on the idea. My question is this:
With the app as talked about above do you think a war could be triggered over a fake video? That being said, there is potential for any sort of propaganda/misinformation to be used in a chain of events with the intent of leading up to a war. SGT Matthew S. For instance, the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the excuse, not the cause of World War 1. A combination of factors such as military alliances, imperialism, nationalism and a severe underestimation of one's opponents were the driving causes of that war.

I think this is one of many reasons why Congress should vote to declare war instead of the President having unilateral power to order the military in warfare. We were drawn in to the Spanish American War by a horrific accident and yellow journalism (Remember the Maine). I don't think a lone set of deep fakes alone would do it, unless it was used as an excuse for something a nation wanted t do all along.

One thing that makes MILDEC dangerous is that adeptly skilled MILDEC feeds what analysts and commanders have already drummed up as possible or likely. It is how the Allies faked out the Germans on the Pas de Calais as the invasiòn beaches vice Normandy. The German Command was convinced that is where it would be As it was the shortest distance between A and B and our existing MILDEC was being believed. The Command was out of position on D Day, as they were attending a rehearsal of an Allied Invasion and their response, at the Pas de Calais. See attached link.

Use of deception by militaries is as old militaries. Like any other tool/weapon, it has evolved as technology has evolved. Countermeasures have evolved accordingly.

One thing technology hasn’t been able to overcome is the uncanny valley. It’s the innate ability for people to be able to differentiate between other real people and facsimiles of people (drawings, paintings, robots, cgi, etc). No matter how life-like, people can generally spot the fake. (This ability has been observed in other primates, also).

There are lots of problems to worry about that might cause a war. This particular issue is low on the list.

https://www.businessinsider.com/r-lithuania-sees-fake-news-attempt-to-discredit-nato-exercises-2018-6

Lithuania says report of a US military vehicle killing a boy in an accident is fake news...

A blog post about the supposed incident appeared on a website made to look like Lithuania's top news site, and the story has emerged amid a massive NATO military exercise in the Baltics.

SGT Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 31 Jan 2019 01:45:48 -0500 2019-01-31T01:45:48-05:00 2019-01-30T20:01:01-05:00
