Do you sell yourself better on RP than you really are?

RP gives you the opportunity of "selling" yourself with a better "value" that you may have. With Google at your side, every discussion response is as close as the "search" button. AR's, FM's, PAM's, etc. everything at your reach with the right queue.
Now, do you conduct yourself outside this site as professional as here?
Would you have the same "Influence Points" in real life? I hope you do...

Now that depends. Most of the time I am very professional, but if I go to a hospitality suite that may be a different story. Especially if there is Apple pie shine there. LOL!!!

If you see me on FB, you'd swear who was the idiot who gave me stripes (some of those SNCO's are on FB as my friends). But my FB is evolving. Instead of following the normal, I follow dogs, horses, cars, bikes, and weapons. Not much political BS with dogs. On here, it's a different and more professional site, and if you act up in a manner that doesn't support your rank, you'll be called out. So here for the most part I maintain my bearing, and act like a NCO should. I don't know everything, but there are enough folks who when combined do. If we met in real life, depending on who you are, I'd probably be quiet as hell. I also use this site as a release for stress, hence why I like to post videos in the humor section. We spend 90% of our lives being serious as hell. Let's enjoy the last 10% with a smile.

How about flipping this. Do people ask questions on here that could have easily been researched with minimal effort using Capt Google?

The main reason that doctrine is cut and pasted here, as opposed to paraphrasing that might be used off-line, is quite simply because we can. Most leaders I know can site the reg or FM, but not verbatum.

Another point..now that everyone has pocket internet ability, is bringing up a reg on a tablet or phone during some off-line discussion any different then cutting and pasting in a forum?

Negative. I'm just as incompetent in real life as I portray myself here, LOL. 4 years active duty then the rest ALARNG.

I was an NCO in a National Guard BCT as a Scout.

No Airborne, no Ranger; no Air Assault, just an NCO doing the best I could to keep my soldiers motivated during some hard days and nights.

Anything "remarkable" about my career is a direct result of the NCO's I served under making sure I was prepared to take the torch when necessary. They were hard and demanded discipline, but they were honest and fair.

Nothing special here, but there is a great deal which is special about my former NCO's throughout my Jr. Enlisted ranks.

You have a very valid Point. Anyone can find the right lingo nowdays with Google and can damn near pretend to be anything you can think of. Definitely makes it a Challenge to find the Real McCoy. I have a few folks that will bona fide me here that I served with but for the most part most here don't know that I am what I say I am. Guess the rest of you will have to Take me at my Word as a Retired Naval Communicator and Spook. I guess there is the Fact there is Public Record of me Being Commander VFW Post 10299 Prairie Village KS but all that tells you is that I served in the Military and served in a War Theater. I am a human being and therefore prone to mistakes. I say things that I wish I could take back. On a site such as this, one can type something out and then think about it and delete it or edit it prior to posting. Unfortunately we cannot do this with words. So I would say that no one is exactly who they are online as they are in person. We all need to remember one thing, EVEYONE makes mistakes, it is what we learn from these mistakes is what makes us professional or unprofessional.

What I post does not complete the story and under sales what I did in the service, I have been in the commercial side now for 10 years, the way I manage projects, and get the jobs done and being to help out in other areas are what the civilians understand. There are three of us that have a past military service, when we post about career its more about the size and type of project that clients and hiring managers are looking for.
