Do you salute the flag or the music when the flag is being lowered or raised?

I cannot bring myself to render a hand salute in civilian clothes and especially without a cover on the gourd. Marines never salute uncovered and we don't salute in civilian clothing. I know there was some sort of edict put out that "authorized" veterans to salute in civilian attire, I just cannot do it. I do put the hand over the heart and assume the potion of attention.

Not with a military salute. I put my hand over my heart but haven't done this in some time since I don't work on post anymore.

Yes Sergeant, that would be retreat! Usually around 1700. and raised would be reveille and normally around 0600 or 0700. Both usually, time wise, are different per installation.

If you can see the flag, you salute that. If you can't see the flag, then you salute the music assuming you are in uniform with a cover on your head. If you are not in uniform with a cover on your head, then you stand at attention either facing the flag or the direction of the music.

Yes, from a young age I was trained that a citizen always shows respect for the flag. I stand, uncover, and salute.

Flag. Only time I ever heard the music and didnt see the flag was on post though, and then we were to salute the post flag .. which may not have been the same direction as the loudspeakers playing taps or reverie
