Marines never salute uncovered and we don&#39;t salute in civilian clothing. I know there was some sort of edict put out that &quot;authorized&quot; veterans to salute in civilian attire, I just cannot do it. I do put the hand over the heart and assume the potion of attention. If you can&#39;t see the flag, then you salute the music assuming you are in uniform with a cover on your head. If you are not in uniform with a cover on your head, then you stand at attention either facing the flag or the direction of the music.<br /><br />But I had to share this image because your question reminded me of it.
