Do you need air assault to become a pilot or is it just common to have it as a pilot ?

Better to have and not need, than to need and not have. Take every school and sponge it up even if it is a “nice to have” rather than a requirement.

I actually don’t see too many pilots with a AAB. However, more training is always better than less.

WTF? Pilots fly, they don't have to rappel, sling load, etc. They FLY. It can help if they are qualified, so as to understand what is going on. But to force them to qual is like having a surgeon go to Ranger school to learn how to tie knots.

Let me put it another way. If you were to buy a local McDonalds Restaurant. As the owner, wouldn't you want to know how the GM was trained? How the crews were trained. While it maybe true the GM's job to manage those people, wouldn't you be a little curious if the GM was doing a good or bad job? Same concept. If your going to do Air Assault Operations, in my view it helps you to know what everyones responsibility on the combined team is. Plus, it is a fairly easy school to pass.

I've no idea where you came up with that or who told you that, but no. Either way, Air Assault is good to have and to be a pilot, you've got a long way to go from PFC to flying, take advantage of Air Assault if they offer it.

AA is technically an optional school in that you have the option of either going if the bosses say so, or getting several rations of grief if you turn it down. I don't know if it's still true, but AA school was all but manditory for Ft. Campbell; it wasn't a matter of if you'd go, but when. So even pilots would go through the school eventually. 10th Mtn and 25th ID also had schools, but they were less open to everyone than Sabulaski ever was. :)

Not a requirement but if you understood the curriculum of the AASLT school, you'd see that it enhances their knowledge and understanding of the roles and the true importance of air assault operations.

I’m was Air assault before I became a pilot. It gave me zero useful skills as an aviator. Although it did make me laugh in retrospect. All the time I though I was guiding in this helicopter... tsk just move. We know where to land...

There are no requirements to be a pilot and be air assault qualified. However most pilots at Campbell have it due to the school being there.
