He was one of the Tuskegee Airmen. During WWII, then "Captain Davis was assigned to the first training class at Tuskegee Army Air Field (hence the name Tuskegee Airmen), and in March 1942 earned his wings as one of five black officers to complete the course. He was the first black officer to solo an Army Air Corps aircraft."<br />While in college, we frequently jumped at Moton Field in Tuskegee (site of primary flight training). We were told that it was GEN Davis that got the FAA to build the huge runway there, but I was never able to confirm it.<br />GEN Davis died in 2002.
