The Kansas-Nebraska Act passed Congress in January 1954 and birthed the Republican part in February 1854. The author of the Kansas-Nebraska Act Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas was one of the three candidates defeated by the Republican candidate for President in 1860 Abraham Lincoln.
Many of the battles in the Civil War were chance conflicts as forces were conducting what we might term today as movements to contact. The Battle of Vaught's Hill in 1863 was a chance meeting that resulted in a Union victory.
John Wilkes Booth and six co-conspirators had hoped to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln on this day in 1865 in an attempt to give the Confederacy leverage in suing for peace. They miscalculated and failed to execute the kidnap plot.
Since RallyPoint truncates survey selection text I am posting events that were not included and then the full text of each survey choice below:
a. March 20, 1862 Threatened by Stonewall Jackson, Nathaniel Banks withdraws from Strasburg, Virginia to Winchester, Virginia
b. March 20, 1864 Red River Arkansas campaign. [3/10/1862 – 5/22/1862] A.J. Smith's force arrived at Alexandria on March 20, 1864, intending to rendezvous with Banks's forces, under the immediate command of Franklin. However, Franklin did not arrive at Alexandria until March 25, 1864, and Banks himself, travelling separately from his troops, did not arrive at Alexandria until March 26, 1864.
1. March 20, 1852 First publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Harriet Beecher Stowe's best known novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), changed forever how Americans viewed slavery, the system that treated people as property. It demanded that the United States deliver on the promise of freedom and equality, galvanized the abolition movement and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. The book calls on us to confront the legacy of race relations in the U.S. as the title itself became a racial slur. Uncle Tom's Cabin was a runaway best-seller, selling 10,000 copies in the United States in its first week; 300,000 in the first year; and in Great Britain, 1.5 million copies in one year. It resonates with an international audience as a protest novel and literary work.
2. March 20, 1854 In Ripon, Wisconsin a group of citizens under led by attorney Alvan E. Bovay met in a schoolhouse in support of the abolition of slavery. They adopted the name "Republicans."
3. March 20, 1863 Battle of Vaught's Hill occurred on March 20, 1863, in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Pursuing Col. Albert S. Hall’s brigade, Confederate Brig. General John Hunt Morgan's cavalry caught up with him on the morning of the 20th, at Vaught's Hill.
During the inactivity following the Battle of Stones River, a Union brigade-sized reconnaissance force, under Col. Albert S. Hall, left Murfreesboro on March 18. Circling to the northeast, Hall encountered Confederate Brig. General John Hunt Morgan's cavalry command which caused him to fall back to a position east of Milton.
Pursuing Hall, Morgan's men caught up with him on the morning of the 20th, at Vaught's Hill. Dismounted, Morgan struck at both Union flanks, even to the point of encircling Hall's hilltop position. Hall conducted a perimeter defense and withstood all Confederate attacks, which lasted till after 2:00 pm. Morgan continued to bombard the Yankees until 4:30 pm, when he broke off the engagement, after learning that Union reinforcements were en route from Murfreesboro.
Union forces continued to strengthen their position in Middle Tennessee.
4. March 20, 1865 John Wilkes Booth initially plotted to capture President Lincoln and take him to Richmond, the Confederate capital. However, on March 20, 1865, the day of the planned kidnapping, the president failed to appear at the spot where Booth and his six fellow conspirators lay in wait. Two weeks later, Richmond fell to Union forces. In April, with Confederate armies near collapse across the South, Booth hatched a desperate plan to save the Confederacy.
LTC Stephen F.
