SGT Private RallyPoint Member6051217

So recently I checked my Les and saw that i had a deduction for the mgib bill of $100.00. I talked to NCOs about it and was told by multiple that it is only used for trade jobs. I was also told that i should be able to have the post 9/11 gi bill since im doing three years of active duty. Since im eligible for the post 9/11 bill. Do i even need the mgib? Who would I talk to, to opt out of it.Do you have the option to not participate in the MGIB?2020-06-28T16:36:39-04:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member6051217

So recently I checked my Les and saw that i had a deduction for the mgib bill of $100.00. MGIB is NOT just for trades, but it is my understanding is that the Post 9/11 GI Bill supersedes all that. The MGIB is for college, not trade schools. When you go to use your GI Bill you’ll get to choose whether to use the old or new one. Which one works better for you depends on your situation. Your NCOs have never actually used a GI Bill so they don’t know anything about it. The old one pays cash straight to you. The new one pays the college for your tuition and a prorated BAH to you.
As for opting out, you already opted in to paying the MGIB at the MEPS. That’s why you are now being charged for it. If you use up all of your Post 9/11 GI Bill, you will get your $1200 refunded to you.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 28 at 2020 5:31 PM2020-06-28T17:31:09-04:002020-06-28T17:31:09-04:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member6052177

the rules were changed in a court ruling recently and now you can use the MGIB after the post 9/11. you have a max of 48 months of entitlements though.Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 29 at 2020 1:08 AM2020-06-29T01:08:39-04:002020-06-29T01:08:39-04:00SSgt Christophe Murphy6053234

So first I would strongly suggest you do some research about the various layers and flavors of the GI Bill before you make a decision that you won't feel the impact until you are too far past the point to fix it.

The GI bill has multiple chapters that do different things. Chapter 30 is Montgomery but don't torpedo the whole thing because you will want to use the post/9-11 chapter 33.

You should reach out to your local VA rep and your base education center before you cut ties because you will most likely realize you want to keep it.

https://www.benefits.va.gov/GIBILL/comparison_chart.asp
