Is it termite damage or wood rot or cracks in the foundation? Is it just a minor remodel to remove old plaster or redoing the flooring? Are you knocking down partition walls or messing with the load bearing walls? Or is it just the appliances, cabinets or counter tops that are being updated? Also are we restoring it back to previous condition or upgrading to modern code? Like new insulation to regulate the temperature better? Or new windows to minimize condensation or air leaking through the seals.

I suggest writing down your plans and figuring out a budget. Then visit local county laws to see what you can or cannot do. Find out if you need a building permit or a licensed contractor to perform the work -just in case it needs to be inspected by the city. If you need ideas there are various websites that showcase numerous remodels. If you have specific questions about hardware or wiring, etc, etc, visit a hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. Be very mindful of any existing electrical wiring and the load your junction box can handle if you plan to add more utility. Know where your pipes are at: above and underground. You may also need to hire a hazmat crew depending on how old your home is... like asbestos paint removal, or mold removal, or anything biological hiding in the cracks.

You can also get someone to come out and do a preliminary estimate or a consultation.

http://www.pbs.org/show/old-house/

Watch Full Episodes Online of This Old House on PBS

Watch This Old House videos on demand.
