Do you have a Job that uses the skills you learned in the Military?

I am working in a skill that I learned from the Army. I'm wondering if many of our veterans have continued working in the skill they learned from the military.

After leaving active duty I went to college and, eventually, went into the federal civil service. I learned a lot of new skills upon entering the civil service (and throughout my career to date) but my military education and experience laid the groundwork that made that possible.

Well yes and no, they don't allow me to rid the world of scum any more at least not with my M1A But there are many many kids who are now adults who will tell you they learned respect from a U S. Marine NCO. Lol

Infantry skills don't all transfer, but that was not at all my focus when I signed the enlistment papers. I was of the mindset that someone's gotta do their time "on the line" and I was willing to Man Up and do mine. That was the dialog in my head at 18. It doesn't mean I'm questioning those who made different choices, in MOS, or Branch.

I learned IT, particularly system administration and IA, in the Navy and that's what I do now working for a defense contractor on a military contract.

Well, i signed infantry and plan on doing it for a while but after the army i want to be a high school teacher. Weird huh.

I was artillery for four years-being a heavy equipment operator wasn't appealing, so I changed over to satellite communications...see people left and right get hired into the civilian market starting at GS-12 with only 6-8 years in, I just finished my associates and plan to finish my bachelors, should be good :)

Yes i did learn my skill in the Mil. as a 13C we not only ran TACFIRE, IFSAS and AFATDS we were responsible for the 1st shop maint and repair. Today im an Electronics Tec because i was tought those mad skills as an Artilleryman.

I was primarily working on Small Computers and Middleware towards the end of my career, but it was all in the realm of Logistics Management and Support. I'm a Logistics Manager now working for the DOD, particularly the DON supporting Tactical Weapons Systems and Vehicles.

Never a dull moment and I'm always learning something new :)

I had a difficult time finding employment when I retired. I worked odd jobs here and there. One day I was fed up and decided to use my skills from the Corps. I used all my connections from the Corps, scrounged up 5 M198 howitzers and some crew serves. I then started a neighborhood watch program. I knew now my years of being in artillery were going to pay off. In the first week we did 5 direct fire missions on speeders, and shot the FPF when 2 jay walkers went against the walk light by the VA. 3 days ago we did a shake n bake on this guys lawn. He was watering on an off watering day. Ha Ha, lets see the grass grow now after 10 rounds of WP splashed down on it.
So over all good results with this career move. My friend from 1st tanks is getting in a similar business one town over. I know we are making it a sa......FIRE MISSION!!!!!!!

SFC Charles S. in my AIT, 92Y (Unit Supply Specialist), the armorer was a civilian. He served +20 years as a Yankee and he couldn't stop bragging about his $36/hr he was making as the armorer. So I guess he could comment in this discussion.
