On July 8, 1967, 9,999 of my closest friends and I traveled from Great Lakes, IL to Soldier Field in Chicago, Il. We were from all of the different Schools at the Naval Training Center and the Recruit Training Center. Trains were arranged to take us from the depots at North Chicago to Chicago Terminal and then Busses to Soldier Field. 10,000 Sailors moved to make a Living Flag!

The White portions of the flag were easy, we were in our whites. Can you guess the Red and Blue areas? Red and Blue Plastic Bags (Trash Bags) that we put on after we were in place. I was one of the E-4 and below who made up the Flag itself. Those standing around as supervising were E-5 and above Instructors, and Students. Company Commanders were assigned somewhere else.

If you look very closely, I was the third Sailor in the third red stripe from the blue field, top of the row. I was the one smiling.

After we were done, we got a box lunch and were allowed to either go straight back to the Naval Base or spend the Day in Chicago. We had free transport in and around Chicago the whole day on busses and free transport on the trains back to the base until midnight!! Wow!

The first time I visited Fort McHenry, I sat through a presentation about the War of 1812 and how the troops kept giving their lives to ensure the flag never fell. At the end of the presentation they very quietly start singing the national anthem (the video that is). The music grows louder and towards the end of the song, they begin opening the curtains to plate glass windows that provide a view of the fort and a very large flag. It is quite moving (or at least it was to me). Sitting through that made me appreciate our national anthem and our flag all that much more and brought a tear to my eye.

But I do like this one of Michael W. Smith at a Freedom Concert in 2010.

I don't have a photo, but driving near Baltimore this evening, i saw a pretty large flag displayed proudly in the bed of a pickup truck. I'm sure it was there because today was the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner, so it was a special day in Baltimore.
