In my case it was a NYSE investment that paid for it in it's entirety and it is still on the prepaid maintenence plan so I have not paid a penny in 3 years of driving it. Not even for an Oil change. Cost of ownership is actually less than my last General Motors car. Should have bought a Benz sooner.

When I enlisted, an E1 earned $89/mo. That was about the same as my monthly car payment when I enlisted (I was working at a good job before entering the Army and had a really nice car - not exotic or classic, just nice and had bought it new). I gave all that up for $89/month. It was just beer and cigarette money. Everything else I needed was provided until I earned a commission. Even then, a 2LT only earned $303/month. But, what the hell, I was off to Vietnam. Didn't need anything nice there. My point is that your point is a good one. I see E1s, 2s, and 3s, earning more money than I could have dreamed of at that time and can well understand how it's burning holes in their pockets since everything else is still provided. Many get married and their families quickly learn how little an E1, 2, or 3 earns as they struggle to survive while they spouses are deployed. Sometimes, it's good to remember that the best things in life are worth saving for, waiting for. Glad you mentioned it...

Not exactly a classic or in no way exotic, but my 1996 Impala SS is pretty rare. It wasn't so much I had to save a while to get it, but that I had to look a long time to find a relatively low miles and one in good shape. I looked 12 years for the nearly stock cream puff in the right color, BLACK!
