I made the comment to another friend that we as a nation have lost site of things. Just look back on how this nation came together following the attacks on 9/11. There were no "Black Lives Matter", "Blue Lives Matter", "White Lives Matter"; it was "American Lives Matter". Is there a problem with racism? Yes there is. Do some people get the bad end of the stick based on race, greed, gender (or gender-identification), wealth, or education? Absolutely. But the bigger picture as I see it is we have become a nation divided and as President Lincoln said all those years a go, "a house divided cannot stand". During the Cold War, when we lived under the shadow of nuclear annihilation, scifi movies were equally grim -- The Day the Earth Stood Still, It Came From Outer Space, The Thing, Body Snatchers, Invaders From Mars, When Worlds Collide, etc. Following the Cold War, we were given ET and other cuddly space creatures. It seems that fear can express itself in many forms. Today, we are living in fear from global economic recession and the threat of a Stone Age culture invading Western Civilization. People are once again afraid and, as usual, turn to the familiar for comfort. People of different races are not familiar. They're not family. They're not the same tribe. Thus, it's easy for the race baiters, those who gain wealth and political power pandering to the racial divide, to play to the fears of both sides. That's my opinion... The problems are many in our society. The problems have deep roots going back throughout our history. Overall, I think we are improving, but sadly much of that improvement is limited to far too few of our country.
We have to address all of our social ills, not just one or two.
