Not at all. That would require passion, a plan, intent. No, the government is something far worse: apathetic. Governing officials simply do not care about The Big Picture in any way that does not involve them or theirs, directly.

Turning? Guess you lost me, because I thought the Gov pretty much ignored us years ago. If it doesn't give them $$$ in their pockets, which are already lined as it is, then they don't care about it, or us.

"We the people.....".

They do what they have done for ages, only far more sophisticated than what was envisioned by the Founders. There was no intent for the public to decide on who the President should be by popular vote. The electors (delegates) were constructed to provide representation by all states on an equal basis, which was good. What took place later was what determined who we could vote for through the system in different manners in each state. All controlled by the party committees. (RNC/DNC).

We are now pawn to the system that we permitted to take place. Why should they care what we think? Maybe I will emigrate to Germany, at least one of our members love it over our system, albeit from afar.

Actually, I don't think that the government has turned against its people, but rather that We the People have turned ourselves over to our government. To those who still prize their individual freedom, it may appear that the government is turning against them. However, the truth is that it is their neighbors who are turning against them.
