Do you drive an electric vehicle?

Many choose a vehicle based on emotional fulfillment or perceived image. Some think they need a 1-ton truck when 99% of the time all they haul is themselves to work and back and short errands within short distance of home. I don't mean to suggest we abandon our hot rods and muscle cars altogether- they are way too much fun.

But If we are to become less dependent on foreign oil (an unsustainable resource and a foreign policy factor) we need to change our attitudes about what we honestly need for our daily commutes. Electric vehicles are coming of age and are becoming more and more practical and affordable. What do you think?

At work I get to drive a Hybrid and took me a while to get used to turning it on and not hearing a sound.

I drive a V8 SUV, but I have been known to drive one of these electric vehicles on weekends.

I drive a 2003 (1st gen) 2-seater Honda Insight with 202k miles. I paid less than $6k for it 3 years ago and it gets around 50mpg. 10 gallons of fuel lasts me about 2 weeks of city driving. On the highway, a full tank will go for about 700 miles.

With prices of the Nissan Leaf at just over $20k, putting NO gas in my car ever and the instant torque acceleration fun is looking mighty attractive. My commute is pretty short, so the 80 mile-ish range would probably last me a few days or so.

No, but the ones I drive are "electrifying", as John Travolta said in "Grease"... :-)

If I was in a much higher pay grade, I'd buy a Tesla Model S in a heartbeat. The BMW i8 is a strong contender too.

I make my living (well used to make) in oil and gas. Electric cars will never bring independence from foreign oil. All of the plastics that are in them still requires crude oil for the production of plastics. I hope to see the oil go back to $90 + per barrel again so I can return to the oilfields again. I miss making $120K a year.

I'm a straight up Redneck.....
Don't let me catch anyone driving a smart car....you will be laughed at....buying a smart car is the same as buying 3.2% beer, when the high point is at a liquor store ;)
