Do we the people forget the words our politician say too quickly?

I can not understand how we the people can give the POTUS or any other politician a free pass on what they have said with complete openness and then do the opposite time and time again.
Was he just an ignorant junior politician that did not understand how the office of president worked?
Or is he a hypocritical liar now?
And so as to not put words in responders mouth.. if you have another explanation for this ..please post up.

To offer a counterpoint, perhaps he "learned" that his idealistic views while in Congress did not match the requirements of the Presidency.

Much like a PFC who talks smack about the Sergeant Major or 1st Sergeant only to learn what is actually needed when placed in that position himself. Yes, the words bite him in the tail but there isn't a world wide record of every idiotic statement made from 10 years in the past.

Many voters seem to forget the promises or else they are so jaundiced they recognize the false promises for what they are yet continue to vote for whoever promises to give them more SGM Erik Marquez.
I hope and pray that by the next election sufficient people with wisdom and strong character will vote after examining the various candidates platforms and vote strategically.

We hold soldiers to higher standard than the people we elect to REPRESENT us and then act like they are the problem when we have disaster like we do in Washington? Why would they stop lying to us?

To add to, or more accurately compound, the issue, the Fourth Estate has completely lost it way and has realized that it can make more money and press it's own agenda instead of informing 'We the People'.

To many people have decided that is too hard being a free people and have succumbed to the numbness of the nanny state instead of the struggle of being a free people.

I personally don't think he was expecting to get elected...that is why it took him so long to pick a cabinet...he wasn't fully prepared for the challenges. I think he was a sacrificial lamb for the Democratic party and gained momentum in the home stretch. Based on that I believe he wasn't real sure about how the office of president worked. It is easy to criticize the job above you when you have never walked a mile in the shoes...I have found that out before and had to eat crow (not very tasty). Once he got in and found out what he could and couldn't do based on precedent and the actual workings of the office, I think he turned into a "hypocrite" as a lot of politicians do unfortunately and we do not hold them accountable to their actions or words. Therefore, I think he would have said just about anything (as a lot of politicians do) to gain the advantage. However, you are right, we do not hold our politicians to the very words they blurt out. They will twist and spin them but they are what they are.

We have a corrupt system. It has not always been this way - read history. With History as our classroom this will not last much longer. Younger, smarter generational Leaders will recognize this generational change and run and Win on populist cultural changes like Integrity matters, New Ideas, term limited government, .... versus the Baby Boomer Gen of Politics - very divisive, Us v Them, the Democrats are the Enemy ... FYI, I've Run very unsuccessfully for Governor of Colorado twice, 2010, 2014. I'm still astonished at the absolute level of corruption and complete lack of Integrity in the system. I only mention this as a reference point from someone who holds Integrity at the highest possible point. There's a saying in politics and organizational theory that states :"where you stand depends on where you sit". A senator's view of what is and isn't considered going around congress will always be different than any president's view. And a president may very much believe that the preference is to work with congress until that proves impossible. So it is hardly unusual for a president's position on presidential power to change after he becomes president.

As for presidential candidates saying things on the campaign trail that end up changing later, has there ever been a case where that didn't happen? Does "read my lips, no new taxes" or "we will not use the US military for nation building" ring any bells?

Immediately prior to that quote, then Senator Obama pointed out to the audience how long he'd studied and taught Constitutional Law.
He knew exactly what he was saying, but he was saying it from the perspective of a legislator who had just had one of his signature issues, defunding the Iraq War, outmaneuvered by the Bush White House.

I think that he spoke his beliefs at the time; but after "working" with a Do Nothing Congress whose only purpose over the last 7 years has been to ensure that the President cannot do anything it becomes necessary to reevaluate your beliefs in the system. Republicans that have practiced obstructionism for the last 7 years have no business complaining when the President takes executive action to make something happen!

I think it some of both with more of it towards the lying part. Politicians will say what they think is best to get votes. He could not say at the time that he was going to use his phone and pen to make changes because his opponents would have jumped on that right away. I don't he could have said a lot of things in 2008 that he ended up doing as President. But he is not alone in this. Donald Trump is saying a lot of things that sound good but in reality, they will be very difficult to enact such as getting Mexico to pay for the wall he will build on the border. He says what many people want to hear. So if the wall does not get built with funding by Mexico does that make him a liar? Does he really think he can do this? So I think it is inherent in politics.

It was a classic political bait-and-switch based on race/gender/class/religion alignment in order to pull in votes. He has done nothing but divide our nation even further since then, along those same (above mentioned) "alignments", pitting American against American in order to propagate his once hidden agendas. Of course, when it is "common knowledge" that "all politicians lie all the time" then no one is disappointed if one of them says something different "now" than they said "then".

There is only one possible solution and that is to make REALLY sure that the politician you are going to vote for has the correct "R" or "D" after their name. That way you don't have to listen to what they are saying and can support them uncritically against those people who are completely devoted to destroying America if they point out that the person you voted for is saying something "now" that is different from what they said "then" - because "That's different" from you doing your patriotic duty by pointing out that the person you didn't vote for is lying now because they aren't saying the same thing that they used to say.

To get yourself in the right frame of mind, repeat the mantra "Obamacare is a socialist plot, Romneycare is patriotic compassion." three hundred times per day.
