Do we need to shift our focus from a specific "Islamist terrorist group" to all threat groups within the continental U.S.?

We see the names Nidal Hasan, Hasan Akbar, Mohammad Abdulazeez, John Muhammad and we shift our focus and thinking to concentrate on a specific group because of their religious or perceived religious affiliation and our media perpetuates this image by constantly flooding the news with their images and stories about Islamic radicalism. Flooding the media causes an unjustified mass perception that the number of attacks is on the rise and that they are mainly perpetuated by this specific group. Historical statistics however reveal that more terrorist attacks are perpetuated by white males espousing white supremacy and Extereme Christian values and those dissatisfied with the government than other groups. To name a few incidents the Wisconsin Sikh Temple massacre, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church shooting, the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing, The Oklahoma City Bombing. Jewish Extremist have also committed acts of terror on U.S. soil. By concentrating on any particular group we set ourselves up to become the victims of other groups. Good luck on controlling what the mass media decides to report or fixate on. As for who the police and security apparatus are looking at. In my experience, I don't see them ignoring anyone based on their religious belief, skin color, political leanings, or even age.

Extreme Right Wing Groups like the KKK and American NAZIs have racked up a Higher Body Count. So I would say that our own Homegrown Tin Foil Hat Wearing, Xenophobic Nut Job with a Gun is more of a threat to the rest of us.

When doing risk assessment you don't look only at the likelihood of occurrence but also at the level of loss. In some cases, you have to protect from low probability, but catastrophic possibilities.

In terms of human life, it is difficult to define "acceptable loss". While military planners have done this forever, it is not an acceptable discussion for most civilians, much less politicians. I think we are long overdue for a discussion on whether what we spend on anti- and counter-terrorism measures exceed the return on investment.

Concentrating on specific groups is more important than the affiliation as a whole. For example, not all Christians are targeted because of the actions of Westboro. Not all Caucasians are targeted because of the actions of the Klu Klux Klan. Of course there are some that do not understand and do target a group as a whole, but that should not be the case.
