In today's social media age companies do pay attention to it more after being hired than before because you can hide your profile from non friends viewing your profile but after you are hired like most of us we like the company FB then you are openings yourself up for companies media policy. I can admit that as a hiring manager I use all tools possible to get the best candidates. Hope that helps some.

It could be part of the back ground investigation, but they don't disclose what the look at. So if you have any doubts start cleaning up your social networking sites.

Do Potential Employers really pay close attention to Social Media and potential military or veteran employees

I'm going to say that depends on the position and wage you are seeking. Some employers are particular about the people they hire in an effort to ensure that the image of their company will not be affected by the image of their employees...

Work on building your LinkedIn account. As a professional networking site, it can help build a professional Social Media image that outshines any potential detractors that show up in other social media. I think most employers understand that Facebook and others is more about personal and family time, but they still want it to reflect the values of the company as well. There is also the fact that social media has been used to get people fired based on actions that violate a companies espoused values.

SGT Hubbard,
After 20 years of experience in manufacturing in the private sector in senior and executive roles, Human Resource professionals do look for anomalies they perceive as possible issues. Unfortunately.... the primary things as stated are ethical behavior or behavior that would put the organization in a bad light. Human Resource professionals assume that past behavior dictates how an individual will behave in the future. Right or wrong....it's a fact......I will also assure you that your LinkedIn page is important to have completely filled out and manage it often.

Sadly they do pay attention. Sadly, most people are not aware that it is not legal for an employer to make hiring and firing decisions based on social media posts. Social media posts have no bearing on job performance. Or that is, it does not address actual skills in performing the job at hand. When you get your annual review - social media posts are not addressed are they? Therefore they should have no bearing on hiring or firing. But, hardly anyone has the money, connections or time to fight any wrongful terminations or discrimination in hiring practices so it continues to exist.

Considering I've seen some of my friends get a Letter of Reprimand and threatened with Article 15's for posting something "private/friends only" on Facebook... I'd say yes. Don't assume that just cause you marked it private no one else will ever see it. Rather assume someone will see it, regardless of its privacy settings. And if you think such a post could place you in a negative lime-light. Don't Post It. Get a paper-back diary for those posts, and even then write in cursive. I heard somewhere it's no longer being taught in schools... eventually no one will be able to read it.
