The graduate student who was at the center of all the discourse at the University of Missouri turns out to be from a wealthy family.

It's ok that he wanted to make things better for minorities. It seems though now that more information is coming out about him and the student president that this information is in conflict with their goals. This is unfortunate.

As none of their demands actually address the problem - bigotry - it seems this is more about diversity than equality. I think a good demand would have been a zero tolerance policy that actually addresses the behavior in question. Seems that if you have more diversity in an environment that tolerates bigotry the problems will only escalate.

If students know they are going to be expelled, suspended or have their financial aid cut if they participate in racist behavior, it is likely students would think twice before acting in an offensive manner especially in today's phone ready society.

However I could this becoming a free speech issue. Regardless of the free speech issue what troubles me is the knee jerk reaction before any investigation is completed or the fact in the days of social media none of the incidents were captured - not even the swastikas. Not to dismiss the fact that racism is real there has however been a number of racial hoaxes on campuses across the country that should if anything prevent one from jumping to conclusions.

From what I've read, the key issue isn't that this kid was being oppressed. The key issue is that a few racist situations occurred on campus & the administration did nothing about it. Now, I'm not up there, but everything I've seen seems to support that premise. Now, if that's truly the case, then this kids' money doesn't protect him from that. Having money doesn't shield you from bigotry. His father being a millionaire doesn't make racist people stop & say, "You know what? Normally, we'd harass & try to kill you, but you have money so we'll exclude you from it." Racist people don't care how much money you have, you'll still be a target for them. Everyone seems to be harping on this kid & completely neglecting that the entire football team AND the entire football staff stopped functioning for the EXACT SAME REASON that the rich kid went on his hunger strike for. So, obviously there's a problem there. What's completely ridiculous is some guy, who graduated from that school years ago, trying to say that there's no race problem there today -especially if that guy would've been completely ignored by the racists in that area.
