During the first phase of boot camp, we sang it every night....but were only allowed to sing the first verse. During the second phase we had earned the right to sing the first two. We recited the rifleman's creed every night once we hit the rack. Before hitting the rack we recited cycle of operation for the M16, and at Edson range we recited the characteristics of a proper shooting position while we were "on line". I suppose some would say my drill instructor's priorities were a little messed up. I still struggle with the last verse but I can shoot expert with the rifle every time.
