Yes, and three of the original flag raisers (the only ones that survived the battle) were there as well. Ira Hayes, Rene Gagnon and John Bradley. Some of the parents of the other flag raisers were there for the dedication as well (Strank, Block and Sousely).

I did not know that. I have been there a couple of times but do not recall the data you mention. I do know that the life expectancy of a Marine on Iwo Jima was very short. It is right that there is a memorial for their sacrifice and victory.
