There had to be something that brought the plane down. As Sherlock Holmes observed, "When you rule out the impossible, that which remains – however improbable – is likely the truth." Then there is also Ockham's Razor (the law of parsimony) which tells us that, "Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected."
