I stayed in because of 9/11 - literally ! I had submitted my paperwork to leave active duty on 31 Dec 2001. 9/11 and subsequent stop-loss for intel types changed that!

I joined 3 years prior, I cant say 100% that I would have joined afterwards knowing I would deploy. I joined when there was nothing going on and I wanted to get some money for school, so I cant put myself in that catagory of those that joined afterwards. They definetly deserve a gratitude for that.

No I was already in serving my country. Though, 9/11 did play into me staying in as I was just finishing up a MED board right after 9/11. I was about 80% sure I was going to request to stay in, but 9/11 made it 100%.

I was pushing 10-years in when that occurred.
I remember I was driving to work, we were going to spend the day cleaning our M2s and MK19s from a range exercise the previous week. The announcement came over the radio but thought it was a skit or joke as I was listening to Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw and they and they are/were known for there antics. But it wasn't a joke, we returned all the weapons to the armory and went to the various barrack's rec rooms and watched the news in disbelief for the rest of the day. Like it was yesterday.

I have always wanted to join the military. This being said my answer is no but I do wish I came in ealrier then I did.

I lived in Jersey City and I was in science class while the attack happened. I saw with my own eyes the first plane hitting the building as I was daydreaming in class. I thought it was a missile and the US was under attack. I lost some family friends from the attack.

Did I join solely because of 9/11? No. Was 9/11 a factor that lead me to joining? Yes.

No, but I did get orders within days and was deployed ricky tick. No regrets.

It was 16 years too late for me. But I was lucky enough to be in the first unit deployed.
